Are We Expecting Snow?
The History of Nordic
Walking
Nordic walking was first developed
in the 1930s during the off-season for national cross-country
ski teams. The walking-with-pole activity was used as a summer
training program for the athletes to stay in competitive form.
Nordic walking experienced a rebirth in the late 1990s in
Finland where fitness walkers adopted it as a time efficient,
low stress, total body workout. It has since spread to Germany,
Australia, New Zealand, parts of Europe, Canada and finally
to the United States. Now Coach
Cassandra and Uncle Dan’s are bringing it to Chicago!
“What most people really need and want
is simply to put their entire body to ‘good use’
so that they can begin functioning at a higher level, feel
good, have vitality, and live long, active lives. That is
exactly what Nordic walking is all about.”
– Tom Rutlin, an early Nordic walking enthusiast
and trainer
