Turn Your Walk into a Total-Body Workout!
Nordic walking is designed to enhance all physical components of fitness: cardiovascular, stretching, and strength training. Nordic walking is a low impact exercise, and it features specially designed poles to activate both the upper and lower body increasing your ability to burn more calories and strengthen your body in less time.

Whether you are new to exercise, an outdoor enthusiast, a fitness buff or an individual striving to lose weight, Nordic walking is a total body activity that everyone enjoys and benefits from.

Where Do You Get Those Sticks?
Coach Cassandra is excited to partner with Uncle Dan’s The Great Outdoor Store. Uncle Dan's carries Leki brand nordic walking poles. Visit one of their four stores and their friendly, knowledgeable staff will help you choose poles to fit your needs.

Did You Forget Your Skis?
Why Would You Want to Walk with Poles?

The Benefits of Nordic Walking:
Proper walking technique with poles can utilize up to 90% of the body’s musculo-skeletal system
Nordic walking strengthens the upper body and creates resistance to improve bone density
Nordic walking burns up to 40% more calories compared to regular walking and increases your heart rate during the walk without increasing perceived exertion
Nordic walking is a low impact activity—the proper use of poles can reduce heel strike force by up to 26%, which places less stress on knees and lower joints
Stretching with the Nordic poles increases joint mobility and promotes muscle balance
Balance, stability and improved coordination are secondary benefits from walking with poles

Other Physical Benefits of a Walking Program:

Are We Expecting Snow?
The History of Nordic Walking
Nordic walking was first developed in the 1930s during the off-season for national cross-country ski teams. The walking-with-pole activity was used as a summer training program for the athletes to stay in competitive form. Nordic walking experienced a rebirth in the late 1990s in Finland where fitness walkers adopted it as a time efficient, low stress, total body workout. It has since spread to Germany, Australia, New Zealand, parts of Europe, Canada and finally to the United States. Now Coach Cassandra and Uncle Dan’s are bringing it to Chicago!

“What most people really need and want is simply to put their entire body to ‘good use’ so that they can begin functioning at a higher level, feel good, have vitality, and live long, active lives. That is exactly what Nordic walking is all about.”
– Tom Rutlin, an early Nordic walking enthusiast and trainer
